Students in this course learn about how communities in diverse parts of the world are meeting the challenges posed by unsustainable development and environmental degradation. By reading short stories and essays, and watching documentary films, students will engage deeply with environmental dangers faced by indigenous communities in parts of South Asia and Latin American. As part of course assignments, students will learn to write a blog post, create an audiovisual essay, as well as web-exhibit that displays their engagement with environmental justice issues. Analyzing contemporary news stories and reports, students will become proficient in identifying and understanding new environmental challenges unfolding in rural areas of the world.
